Auckland

Auckland is far from being the most significant region of New Zealand, but for one factor: Kumeu River. Wine lovers all over the world revere this estate for its Puligny-esque Chardonnays which regularly appear in the Master of Wine examinations to fox and tease the candidates (it certainly was the in year that I sat the exam, and on several other occasions). This is testament to how serious these wines are and if you are in any doubt, take a bottle of the Estate Chardonnay and lay it down for 8,9,10 years and see how it trounces its French counterparts.
