Les Vignerons Parisiens
Les Vignerons Parisiens: Paris' First Urban Winery
Urban wineries seem to be cropping up everywhere, a trend which began in San Francisco has now finally reached Paris. Surprisingly, this is the only one so far, and in what could be considered the gastronomic capital of the world.
Les Vignerons Parisiens are four guys with wide experience of Rhone vineyards and work with old vineyards in Sabran and Visan in the Southern Rhone. All the grapes are certified organic, but not just that, they are impeccably sourced and grown.
The quality coming out of this boutique winery is staggering. The Grenache Blanc ‘An 508’ is quite simply the most exciting young white wine I have had for a number of years, but it doesn’t end there – far from it. Also in their range is a Roussanne Marsanne Viognier called Lutece (the old name for Paris during the middle ages); a single variety, old vine Cinsault ‘Turbigo’, which is the best example I have ever tasted from this variety; and an old vine Grenache ‘Les Templiers’.
The Rhone Valley used to be known for its great reds and whites, which offered superb value, but of late the good stuff has started to get a little pricey. Chateauneuf is no longer a bargain, and whilst there are plenty of decent wines from Cotes du Rhone, Lirac, Gigondas etc, there are none which have excited me as much as these have, and at prices that are well south of most of the ‘known’ appellations, they offer quite exceptional value.
