Val delle Rose 2018 Vermentino 'Litorale'
Vermentino is a very successful grape variety on the Tuscan coast. Val delle Rose's is punchy and aromatic with aromas of a bowl of fruit salad with notes of white peaches, yellow apples and lime with added notes of fresh herbs, honeysuckle and spicy cinnamon. A lively, fresh and summery white, perfect for drinking with salads or seafood or just on its own as an aperitif.
Val delle Rose is owned by Famiglia Cecchi one of Tuscany's most famous family owned wineries. Cecchi was founded in 1893 but has owned this estate since 1966. Cecchi owns a number of other wineries in Tuscany and Umbria including Villa Cerna, Monte Guelfo and Castello di Montaùto.
The vineyard is located in the hamlet of Poggio La Mozza a few KMs south-east of Grosseto in the Maremma region of Tuscany, just 20KM from the coast. Here the climate is much more Mediterranean than the central part of Tuscany where Chianti and Brunello are grown. The wines here are softer and plusher, quite often having an international influence to the wines, but not here at Val delle Rose: these are properly authentic Tuscan wines.
Vermentino is an immensely enjoyable variety, suitable for those looking for an alternative to the ubiquitous Sauvignon Blanc. Best enjoyed in its youth, but it does take on Riesling like notes with a few years of bottle age, but the fruit is so vibrant and delicious, you can't resist drinking this on a warm summer's evening
